Just came across LiquidMetal today. Wow.
At first I thought it was just a twist on Metal Injection Molding (MIM). Digging in a little further I realized that the really cool part isn’t the process, it’s the material.
Liquid Metal isn’t actually a material, but a class of alloys, check out their website for more details, but the gist is that it’s improvement over leading materials for strength + elastic limit is in the ballpark of 2X. Twice.
One curiosity: with all this next-generation appeal, all I can seem to find that was made out LiquidMetal are high-end bats, rackets, and USB sticks. There are some vague references to NASA and medical devices, but not much else.
Still, I’ve put in a call for some samples, but considering that Liquid Metal just got bought by Apple I’m anticipating being stonewalled. We’ll see.
In the meantime, check out this sweet video.
Slackjawed? I was.
